Why did you choose the UPMC residency program?
I initially became interested in the field of PM&R due to its goal of improving the quality of a patient's life through function. Living with a disability has shown me just how important it is to have disability representation, especially in traditionally-gatekept fields like medicine. When I started looking for the next place to begin my residency training, I looked for a place that shared those values of diversity, and whose leadership and residents matched that. Upon learning of the tremendous support that residents receive and the opportunities available in all fields of physiatry, UPMC quickly rose to the top! UPMC provides top-notch clinical training, abundant resident education, and high-impact research. I knew that no matter what field of physiatry I decided to pursue, I would get the best education and experience at UPMC! In addition, being from a small town in NC, I was excited to live in a city. Pittsburgh has all the major offerings of a large city while still being accessible by car and having a modest cost of living.
