Why did you choose the UPMC residency program?
Prior to my career as a physician, I used to own a gym and was a personal trainer and coach. My goal for my second career was to expand upon my mindset of exercise as a healthy lifestyle and shift my focus to exercise and rehabilitation as medicine. A residency program that emphasized breadth of knowledge of general rehabilitation and musculoskeletal medicine would allow me to take my career in any direction I desired, and UPMC is unmatched in this department. UPMC has an emphasis on early independence as a PGY-2 on inpatient rehab units as the primary resident decision maker, which is critical for advancing learning past an intern point of view. Not all residencies have the faculty, staff, or patient population to do this. Additionally, UPMC offers the ability to tailor my schedule to my interests as a PGY-3 and PGY-4 to make sure I am adequately prepared for my career after residency, or for a fellowship, whichever I decide to do. To top it all off, UPMC is at the forefront when it comes to innovations, research, and collaboration in the world of PM&R. I knew that UPMC would challenge me to be the best version of myself as a person and as a physician. Now that I am here, I feel very lucky to call the UPMC residents and faculty my second family.
