Fellowships
OVERVIEW
UPMC PM&R offers six fellowships to qualified physiatrists. Our fellowships offer candidates the opportunity to work and study at one of the leading hospital systems in the country interacting with top-rated programs such as neurosurgery, transplantation medicine, and orthopaedics. Candidates for all fellowships will have completed a physical medicine and rehabilitation residency program and be board certified or eligible at the time of application to one of the fellowships.
Mentorship
Fellows are assigned a faculty mentor based on their interests. Fellows are mentored in research by a team that includes the fellowship director and investigators engaged in research of interest to the fellow. In addition to gaining research experience within the institution, fellows regularly receive awards to attend and present at national conferences.
UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH MEDICAL CENTER
Fellows with the Department of PM&R are trained at UPMC facilities in the Greater Pittsburgh area. UPMC is annually recognized for their rehabilitation care and services and is nationally ranked by the U.S. News and World Reports. Brain Injury Medicine Fellowship

Our BIM fellowship provides instruction from highly experienced and trained professionals across a broad spectrum of specialties to ensure optimal exposure for the fellow. Applicants will be board certified/eligible in physical medicine and rehabilitation.
Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine Fellowship
Program Director: Jason Edinger, DO

This 2-year fellowship is awarded annually to 1 qualified candidate. Fellows are trained at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, a level 1 trauma center and home to the Children’s Hospital Rehabilitation Unit. The 2-year curriculum includes training in general pediatrics, pediatric subspecialities, inpatient comprehensive pediatric rehabilitation, inpatient pediatric rehabilitation consults, outpatient pediatric rehabilitation, and research.

Spinal Cord Injury Medicine Fellowship

The 1-year curriculum includes training in urology, inpatient SCI rehabilitation, consults and acute care, pulmonary medicine, outpatient SCI rehabilitation, and research. Fellows also participate in a continuity clinic.
Sports Medicine Fellowship
Program Director: Ryan Nussbaum, DO

This 1-year fellowship develops leaders in the field of sports medicine with an emphasis in clinical care, team coverage, and medical education. We aim for trainees to thrive in a supportive and academically enriched environment. Ultimately, fellows from this program will lead in their community by providing top level evidence-based sports medicine and musculoskeletal care.
Value-Based Fellowship in Spine and Musculoskeletal Medicine
Program Director: Christopher Standaert, MD
The goal of this 1-year fellowship is to train physiatrists in the advanced management of spine and musculoskeletal conditions and to develop leaders in value-driven care. Clinical expertise is honed through work in novel interdisciplinary PM&R outpatient clinics and rotations with multiple other specialties. A unique aspect of this fellowship is payer and provider collaboration within UPMC, toward a goal of improving spine health across the population of the Greater Pittsburgh area.
Lifespan Rehabilitation Neuropsychology Fellowship
Program Director: Lisa Stanford, PhD, ABPP
This 2-year fellowship program will provide advanced level of clinical, didactic, and academic training in the recognized specialty practice of Clinical Neuropsychology. At the completion of the fellowship, fellows will be ready to be licensed as a psychologist and begin the board certification process of the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) in Clinical Neuropsychology.
