Lauren Desmarais, DO
PGY-2

Why did you choose UPMC residency program?
I decided to apply for a residency in PM&R after I had the opportunity to rotate in this specialty during medical school. I absolutely love the team-based approach to patient care and feel a sense of comradery as we work closely with patients, their families, and the rehab team. I feel that PM&R will lead to a rewarding career as we have the opportunity to see visual, physical improvements in our patient population. This coupled with the opportunity to build rapport in the acute setting of an inpatient admission followed by the ability to pursue continuity of care in the outpatient setting makes this the perfect field for me.
I chose to pursue residency at UPMC as I felt it provided the most well-rounded education which is supported by excellent faculty members and a happy, supportive group of residents. We not only have the opportunity to rotate at various locations with an extremely diverse patient population, but we also have early exposure to a variety of procedures starting as early as our PGY2 year. By the time I graduate, I know I will have had enough exposure to be able to make an informed decision on where my future career path may take me.
