Musculoskeletal Sports and Spine Fellowship


   Recruiting for July, 2015

This is a one year non-ACGME accredited fellowship offering instruction from highly experienced and trained professionals across a broad spectrum of specialties to ensure optimal exposure for the fellow. The applicant should be trained in physical medicine and rehabilitation and Board Certified/Board Eligible.The Fellow is expected to be a leader in education via interactions with the residents through regular Journal Clubs and didactics.

Core Competencies
  • High level performance of spine, peripheral joint and neurological examinations
  • High level interpretation and ordering of spine and peripheral joint imaging studies, including x-rays, CT, MRIs, and musculoskeletal ultrasound
  • Develop skills for independent outpatient clinical practice, including coding, billing, use of electronic medical record, appropriate documentation, medical-legal review, marketing, and continuous quality improvement
  • Develop academic leadership skills, including curriculum development, teaching and mentoring of residents and medical students, presenting at national conferences, and academic networking
Specialty Elective Areas
  • Acute Sports Medicine – performance of on-field athletic management, including management of emergency conditions, treatment of acute injuries, event planning, triage of mass events
  • Interventional Spine – performance of fluoroscopically-guided procedures, including spine injections, as per ISIS guidelines
  • EMG – performance of needle electromyography and nerve conductions studies, ability to successfully past the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine boards
  • Musculoskeletal Ultrasound – performance of diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal ultrasound and ultrasound guided procedures as per AIUM guidelines
  • Sports Concussion – evaluation and treatment of sports related concussion including pharmacological management, and return to play decisions
  • Musculoskeletal Research - Develop an understanding of clinical medical research through topics in statistics, basic measurements, IRB approvals, and clinical design and hands on involvement in a longitudinal research experience
